Discover one of Sicily’s most iconic landscapes through a panoramic walk linking Taormina to Castelmola along the historic Saracen Trail. Reach one of Italy’s most beautiful villages, enjoying spectacular views over the Ionian coast and the places that inspired writers such as D.H. Lawrence. After lunch, return to Taormina to taste Bronte pistachios, visit the magnificent Greek Theatre and enjoy free time between the historic centre and the sea.
Experience one of the highlights of the journey with an ascent to the summit area of Mount Etna, Europe’s highest active volcano. Starting from the northern slope and reaching high altitude by 4×4 vehicles, continue on foot across volcanic landscapes to explore the spectacular summit craters, including Bocca Nuova and the North-East Crater. Weather permitting, enjoy extraordinary views stretching across the Ionian coast, Calabria, the Aeolian Islands and Stromboli.
Travel south to explore the UNESCO landscape of Pantalica, one of Sicily’s most fascinating combinations of archaeology and wilderness. Follow scenic trails through forests, rocky terraces and deep canyons while discovering the ancient rock-cut settlements and necropolises that testify to thousands of years of human presence. At the end of the hike, continue towards the countryside around Noto.
Spend the day discovering Syracuse, one of the greatest cities of Magna Graecia and one of the cultural capitals of the Mediterranean. Explore its extraordinary historical heritage before continuing to Ortigia, the elegant historic island centre where Greek, Roman and Baroque influences meet among narrow streets, sea views and lively squares. Highlights include the Cathedral, the market and the legendary Fountain of Arethusa.
Walk through the protected wetlands of Vendicari, one of Europe’s most important bird migration areas. Among Mediterranean vegetation, salt pans and coastal landscapes, observe the habitats that host flamingos and numerous migratory species. After a light lunch and local wine tasting, continue to Noto for a guided visit of Sicily’s Baroque masterpiece, famous for its golden architecture and elegant urban design.
Before departure, enjoy some free time in the historic centre of Catania, exploring its lively streets, Baroque squares and distinctive lava-stone architecture. After lunch, transfer to the airport for departure.
