Liguria is a narrow strip of coast wedged between the sea and the Apennines: one of Italy’s smallest regions and one of its most dramatic. The Cinque Terre’s five fishing villages are the obvious draw, but the region has far more to offer: the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri running along the ridge above the coast, the medieval backstreets of Genoa, the Roman town of Albenga, the small-scale hill farming that produces some of Italy’s best olive oil, pesto and focaccia.
